The island of Skye is the ideal vacation destination for walkers and water sports enthusiasts. Set amongst a group of islands known as the Inner Hebrides a vacation on the Isle of Skye is a unique experience. A large number of folk visit the Highlands of Scotland to witness the spectacular scenery and many folk readily agree that the Inner Hebrides feature the high-grade and most majestic. In the following article I examine at some of the factors which make the Isle of Skye is such a great place to take a vacation.

Places To Visit On Skye

Although it is not acttually situated on the island no visit would be totally complete without enjoying a day trip to Eilean Donan Castle. One of Scotland’s most photographed monuments the castle has also starred in numerous blockbusters for example the 1985 cult classic “Highlander”. The castle is privately owned but, for a fee , you can meander around the well equipped castle or take a guided tour. The castle is only 15 minutes from the Skye Bridge.

The only real mountain range in the British Isles is The Cuillin which provide challenging opportunities for climbing . In total the jagedy Black Cuillins has twelve munros with Sgurr Alasdair being the highest at 992 m (3,255 ft).

The Isle of Skye only has two Corbetts  (Glamaig is the highest) and both are situated in the Red Hills. The Black Cuillin are exposed rock at their summits whereas the Red Hills (often incorrectly called the Red Cuillin)  are much gentler featuring flora to the very top .

If you want to enjoy some climbing please seek some advice as it can be incredibly dangerous, especially if you are ill equipped. Too many people find themselves in difficult circumstances after a quick shift in the weather, always plan for the worst. You can access the Black Cuillin from Glen Brittle and the Red Hills from Glen Sligachan.

Tourist Attractions include Bright Water Visitor Centre, the Talisker distillery, the Glendale Toy Museum, Skye Museum of Island Life, Giant Macaskill Museum, Armadale Castle Gardens and Museum of the Isles, Colbost Croft Museum and Dunvegan Castle. The stronghold of the Macleods of Dunvegan and Harris, Dunvegan Castle, is proudly set upon a cliff-top. The Isle of Skye has a mild climate and is much greener than most Scottish islands and this is made copiously clear in the beautiful gardens of the castle , you will also find a restaurant and craft shop making it ideal for a day out.

Overlooking the Isle of Raasay, Broadford is a seaside village which has several much needed facilities however is also rather nice place to spend a few of hours. The area has some superb sea views but the top port of call should be the rather small , but amazingly interesting, Skye Serpentarium Reptile World where you really can indulge in some hands on experience!
