holiday to USA- rental car?

my husband and I are going to America soon, and we just had a few questions:

1. Is it better to rent the car online when we book the tickets?

2. I’m American, and I have an American drivers license.. I’m 21. will we have to pay a fee for my age?

3. Do they charge by the mile?

Thank you! :-)

Yes it is much better to book your rental before your trip. The more cars available the lower the price is because they want to sell em. The closer to the trip if they are running low on their vehicles the price goes up. It’s the standard supply and demand sort of thing. Also when you get the price check what the total charges will be including tax. Many rentals now are taxed almost 30% so that can really change the price from the “low” rental rate.

Do you have a major credit card in your name? A cash/debit card does not count in that. You need to have a major credit card or that can pose a problem there for you. Some companies do accept cash/debit cards and/or cash but it’s extremely limited and you have to put down deposits.

Many rental car companies charge a fee for those drivers under the age 25. But the advantage of booking in advance you can compare the various companies because each rental company chooses how much that daily fee is so it could be $10 at one place and $20 at another.

You want to double check with your car insurance company, sometimes they have agreements with a particular car rental company to allow their members that are 21-24 rent without having to pay the underage fee. I know from personal experience Avis didn’t charge under age fees for members of USAA insurance.

Another thing to check with them is do they provide coverage when you’re traveling? Out of the country? Or does your credit card provide any car rental insurance? So that you know if you do need to accept or deny the insurance the rental company will try to offer you (about $20 more a day).

In regards to the mileage, some car policies are unlimited mileage and some charge by the mile (with giving you a free amount then charge over that amount). I’d highly highly highly recommend making sure you book an unlimited mileage. The by mile can really sneak up on you and cost a lot.

Hope this helps you and have a great vacation!!!
