North Berwick is a popular town by the sea, in East Lothian, Scotland. It can be found on the southern side of the Firth of Forth, and is a convenient 25 miles from Edinburgh. The town rose to popularity in the 19th century as a favored holiday resort, featuring two beautiful sandy bays, and people continue to flock to this seaside town in the present time.
The local attractions of North Berwick are testament to its popularity as a seaside resort. Several of the beautiful Islands of the Forth can be seen from the town and can be visited by boat. These include The Lamb, Fidra, Bass Rock and Craigleith. Bass Rock is of particular interest because of the large colonies of gannets, puffins and other sea bird species. The island appears to be white but this color comes from the gannets and the guano they leave behind that covers much of the island’s surface. It is also home to the Scottish Seabird Centre, a visitor observation and education centre focusing on the sea birds in the area.
One of North Berwick’s main attractions is its beaches – golden sands, rocks, a tidal paddling pool and boating pond in the East Sands area. In the summer months, locals and visitors alike flock to the beaches to enjoy the sun and the sea. “Seacliff” is a private and unspoilt estate and private beach, which can be visited for a small fee. The local yacht club, the East Lothian Yacht Club, is host to numerous international and local sailing events.
There are other attractions in North Berwick that are not associated with the beach and water. North Berwick Law is a 613ft volcanic hill, rising above the town itself. It features a signal station that dates back to Napoleonic times. There is the ruined 14th century fortress of Tantallon Castle, located just 3 miles from the town. There is certainly plenty to keep you occupied while visiting North Berwick.
