What is the best way to find private homes (with pool) available for one week vacation rental?

I’m researching and planning for a one week vacation this summer. What I would really like is to rent a modest private home with a pool, just relax and swim everyday without strangers around. I’ve tried looking around but all I’ve found so far is fancy resorts and mansions, on time share and stuff of that nature. I really do want to get away from it all.
I live in central Alabama, just south of Birmingham and I am looking for something within 6 hours drive, the closer the better. Doesn’t have to be in a resort area, as a matter of fact I would prefer a non-resort area, some place out in the rural county. Peace and quiet.

I’d highly recommend Owner Direct Vacation Rentals. They have lots more than just resort/condo rentals. It’s easy to find a private home with a pool for a week in the summer… I wish I knew where you were looking to go so I could give you a link right to the place you want to go.

Anyway, you’ll find lots of vacation rentals here: http://www.ownerdirect.com/. Just find the location either on the map or by using the drop down menus to the left of the map (I find the map easier), and away you go. There’s an advanced search so you can specify that you want a pool too.

Their customer service is the best I’ve found. They’re fast and friendly and can put you directly in touch with the owner so you’ll know exactly what to expect when you arrive!
