The country of Scotland, in the UK, is a tremendous destination to have a vacation featuring a big list of attractions including some of the most stunning museums and galleries in the UK, ideal countryside for hill-walkers, hikers, mountain climbers, ramblers and the likes together with a massive selection of fortified houses, castles, historical buildings and country houses. In the following article I discuss the island of Arran and explain why this is such a excellent place to take a vacation.
The Isle of Arran is a medium sized island and although it is frequently grouped in with the islands of the Hebrides it is actually in the Firth of Clyde further south. As tourism is the Isle of Arran’s main industry it will not surprise you that there is an incredible number of hotels on the Isle of Arran. Although most people visit the island to enjoy the beautiful scenery the island also features a small number of tourist attractions including; Arran Heritage Museum, Arran Transport Museum, Brodick Castle Gardens and Kildonan Castle.
There are a few towns and villages, the biggest is Brodick, the site of the ferry terminal with sailings to Ardrossan in North Ayrshire. Lamlash, four miles south of Brodick, is the point of departure to Holy Island.
Lochranza is most populous settlement in the north of the island and will find the site of the ferry terminal with sailings to Claonaig in Argyll and Bute. It is important to know that the ferry is a summer only ferry. The village is located in a large, and pretty, bay with the ruined Lochranza Castle being the most popular tourist attraction.
Blackwaterfoot is the largest village on the west coast of Arran. It has a public house, a small harbour and a garage (including a petrol (gas) station). Other settlements worth visiting are; Kilmory (south coast), Whiting Bay (south of Brodick), Catacol (in the north), Corrie (north of Brodick) and finally Pirnmill where the best beach on the island is located.
