How long does it take to learn a new language?

I’m 14, and just a couple weeks ago I went back home to Kenya for vacation. I was raised in Canada and raised to speak English, but I want to learn how to speak Swahili.

..I know a couple words..like hello, thank you, welcome, auntie, grandma/grandpa, sorry, money, fine, …random words I picked up…but I want to become fluent.

Thanks! :)

You should be commended for wanting to learn one of the main languages (of your birthplace?) or your parents’. So many children and teenagers resist speaking their parents’ language through cultural adaptation and peer pressure. You are making an intelligent and rewarding decision. I encourage you fully.

There is no easy answer to your question. Language learning is a complex process dependent on aptitude, interest, application, immersion in the environment, and the nature of the language.

Practise regularly with your parents or with other Swahili speakers you may know. Insist on speaking to them in Swahili at least for part of each encounter. Try to take some courses in high school and college.
Listen to Swahili radio stations on the Internet. Get Swahili music, play it and learn the songs. These are all practical ways of learning another language.

Bahati njema!
