If you are looking for a great undiscovered vacation spot this summer, consider visiting Mont Tremblant, a resort nestled in the Laurentian Mountains, about an hour and a half from Montreal. This resort offers something for just about everyone, young or old. While skiers will recognize Mont Tremblant as the premier ski resort in Eastern North America, over the past two decades the resort has added golf, tennis and other facilities that now rank it among the top resorts, not just in Eastern Canada, but in all of North America.

Canadian, European, and American visitors marvel at the natural beauty of the ancient mountains and numerous lakes in the area. The mountain itself actually lies within the Mont Tremblant National Park which spans 1,500 square kilometers. Within the boundaries of the park, visitors can enjoy six rivers, 400 lakes and streams, and a variety of activities catering to the outdoor enthusiast including fishing, camping, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, and bird watching, all at a reasonable cost.

Shoppers will enjoy the wide variety of options ranging from high-end boutiques and art galleries in the resort village to quaint gift shops and bookstores in the adjacent Village of Mont Tremblant and Downtown Mont Tremblant (formerly Sainte Jovite). Top notch restaurants at the resort offer a myriad of dining choices from high end French, Italian, and Asian cuisine to pizza, bison burgers, and outdoor cafes. Nighttime entertainment can be found in one of the resorts numerous bars and taverns. A new addition to the entertainment menu is Casino Tremblant which opened in 2009 and occupies a 21,000 square foot space in a new facility on the mountain’s Versant Soleil, or “Sun Side”. Gaming regulars will appreciate the 436 slot machines and 25 poker and table games. When you need a break from gaming, you can visit the trendy restaurant lounge or enjoy the mountain scenery at Le Bar du Casino. The casino is open seven days a week and is accessible by car, shuttle bus, or by riding the new gondola that connects the resort village to the Versant Soleil.

At the resort village, kids will love the many family-oriented activities including the Luge, EuroBungy-Trampoline, Mini golf, Spider web, Climbing Tower, and Aqua Club. The Adventurer’s Club is a Pirate-themed park with a diverse group of fun games and includes a water playground. The resort also coordinates a myriad of activities specifically designed for kids such as a Treasure Hunt, parades, arts and crafts workshops, and kid-friendly shows.

Mt. Tremblant has become a rising resort destination for golfers ever since the Telus Skins Game was held on the Le Diable course in 1999. That year, Canadian Mike Weir held off world #1 David Duval, 1995 British Open Champion John Daly, and multiple PGA Tour Winner Fred Couples to win $210,000 in prize money. That same week U.S. President Bill Clinton, an avid golfer, joined Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien for a friendly round. Currently, three area courses rank among the Top 100 in Canada according to ScoreGolf. Tennis enthusiasts will appreciate the Mont Tremblant Beach and Tennis Club which is the home of Andre Lemaire’s International Tennis Academy. This facility has been ranked as one of the Top 70 in the World by USA Today and features 25 courts, including green clay, and offers private and group lessons as well as clinics. Resort packages are available. Lake Tremblant is one of the largest lakes in the area and the beach resort boasts a golden sand beach and various water sports including water skiing, sailing, wake-boarding, and kayaking at the Pierre Plouffe Nautical Centre.

Novice and advanced hikers alike will relish the 11 separate trails that span the mountain, ranging from one to nine kilometers in length. Biking enthusiasts will also appreciate the extensive network of paved and unpaved trails. Annual events include the Canada and Quebec Mountain Biking Cups at Tremblant, the 24 Hours of Cycling benefiting the Cedars Cancer Institute of Montreal, and The “Tour de Lance”, a charity event featuring the seven-time Tour de France winner and 42 other cyclists.

Music aficionados will appreciate the Tremblant International Blues Festival held each July, and the Rhythmes Tremblant concert series held throughout the summer and featuring some the top musicians in Quebec. “La Fete de Musique” is a marathon event featuring more than 30 concerts over a three-day weekend in September. Themes range from classical to jazz to world beat.

If you feel the need for speed, Circuit de Mont Tremblant is a 2.6 miles paved road course that has hosted Formula One, Can-Am, Trans-Am, and Champ World series events. Mario Andretti, Bobby Rahal, Jacques Villeneuve, and Michael Schumacher are all veterans of this track. It is home to several races each year including vintage, Formula, and GT classes. Since 1969, the course has been home to the Jim Russell Racing Driver’s School which offers a Formula One experience to aspiring racers and racing fans.

Getting to Mont Tremblant has become easier with the opening of the Mont Tremblant International Airport which offers private charter service as well as direct commercial service to Toronto via Porter Airlines. Continental offers winter service via Newark but is in negotiations to add year-round service along with a handful of other carriers. Never fear, Montreal’s Trudeau-Dorval International Airport is only an hour and a half away and offers service to many North American and European destinations. Vehicles can be easily rented through the major car rental agencies. Accommodations include traditional hotels, but most visitors opt for one of Mont Tremblant’s condominiums, as they can be secured for very reasonable prices, particularly for U.S. travelers who benefit from the exchange rate. Well appointed units can be found mountainside within walking distance of the pedestrian village or on one of the area golf courses.

With so many choices, the biggest challenge for vacationers is figuring out what to do with limited time. Fortunately, there will always be an opportunity for a repeat visit.
