Why isn’t age discrimination illegal?

I travel frequently for work and thrifty is the only car rental place that will allow me to get a luxury car because I’m under 25, and even then, there’s a $30 daily surcharge.

Furthermore, when me and my wife go on vacation, we are limited to what hotels we can stay in because we’re under 25.

It doesn’t make sense to me how it’s illegal to discriminate against someone because of race, but perfectly legal to discriminate against someone because of age.

What if statistics showed that asian people had more accidents than other races, therefore all asian people were charged a $30 daily surcharge on all rental cars.

Or what if stats showed that hispanic people caused more damages to hotel rooms than other races, therefore the hotel wouldn’t allow any hispanics.

If discrimination against race, religion, disability, etc. is illegal, then it should be the same for adults of every age.

I’m not an expert in Actuary statistics (risk analyisis), but I imagine any age restrictions set by businesses are based on some sort of risk assesment reports.

That’s why there are different car insurance rates based on gender and on age of insureds.

That being said, why should it be LEGAL to FORCE a business to INCREASE their financial RISK?

Shouldn’t PRIVATELY owned businesses be allowed to set their own limits (within the law) with regard to financial & legal exposure to potential LAW SUITS based on federal/state accepted actuary statistic reports?
Example: If a car rental business knows ahead of time, that the “18-25 yr old” group has a 75% accident rate, basically 3 out of 4, why assume that risk?

If a “statistical” (industry accepted) report showed that significantly more auto accidents occurred in the 18-25 age group; wouldn’t it be PRUDENT for a CAR RENTAL business to prefer to REDUCE that risk?

Are you saying that anyone in business HAS TO accept ALL risks whether or not it’s preventable? If so, should it be ILLEGAL for gunsshop owners to DISCRIMINATE against selling automatic weapons to TEENAGERS? They S/B FORCED to accept the RISK? Or what about selling alcohol to a 14 year old?

My point is, that businesses have the right (and should) to determine (within the law) how much risk exposure they want to take on, before it affects thier revenue. Yes, profits are what businesses are all about.
