For many people, living on a college campus is their first time truly being independent and living away from home. Whether you are just moving across town, or are attending college across the country from where you grew up, living in an unfamiliar area can be scary. While living on your own, it is more important than ever to consider your personal safety.
Walking alone at night can be unsafe, even on a college campus. If you’re walking back to your dorm, or anywhere else at night, always try to walk in a group. The presence of a group makes it much less likely that you’ll be bothered. Today, many campuses also offer a free shuttle or escort if you find yourself away from your dorm at night. Even if you live off-campus, they will sometimes escort you back to your apartment.
Whenever you are out alone, leave your designer purses or clothing at home. These can be attractive targets to thieves. Walk quickly from point A to point B and stay in well-lit areas. Don’t take shortcut paths that may not be well-lit, especially at night. Stay alert to your surroundings; don’t walk with your iPod in your pocket and your headphones turned on. If something seems suspicious, quickly walk in the other direction, or duck into any occupied building.
Avoid excessive alcohol, especially during your first months in college. You may be excited about the newfound freedom of living away from parental influence, but alcohol can make you lower your guard, and you can be more vulnerable to physical or sexual attacks. If you’re going to a party, let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.
The old adage of “don’t talk to strangers” often falls to the wayside during college, especially as you go to parties and meet hundreds of new people. Be friendly, but also be aware of your surroundings. Be wary of anyone who tries overly hard to get you alone; you never know what their motives may be. Even when you’re out on a date, you are still vulnerable; date rape is an unfortunate occurrence on many, if not most, college campuses.
If you do have to go somewhere at night, carry a small flashlight and some form of self defense, such as a can of pepper spray. Though most other weapons are banned on college campuses, pepper spray is a good way to protect yourself. You can even get a portable canister in the shape of a pen, ring, or other inconspicuous object. Pepper spray works just like a spray can of paint, so it’s easy to use even when you are scared. These devices can get you out of a dangerous situation in seconds.
You may feel that attacks cannot happen to you, but the truth is, now is not the time to let your guard down. Always remember that college campuses are open to everyone, not just students. This means that virtually anyone could be on the campus at any time. Though you may feel safe on your college campus, it’s important to be prepared for worst-case scenarios.
