The Algarve is a great place to go on holiday for all manner of reasons.Â
1. The people
Algarveans are a broad minded, easygoing lot, who have seen a great deal of change in the couple of decades since their area started to become a major tourist attraction. Some of the age-old ways of life (such as small-scale fishing) carry on undisturbed by the visitors who are drawn to this fantastic area. But some things (like the road system) have changed and improved massively.
2. The beaches and countryside are wonderful.
Every summer tourists come down to the charming coves and long golden sandy beaches (some of Europe’s most beautiful) of the southern Portuguese coast. The cooler waters of the Atlantic are cleaner than those of the overcrowded Mediterranean. The region is an extensive and pleasant one, with a Mediterranean climate.
3. There are all types of accommodation – whatever size, level of luxury or distance from any particular attractions.
Discovering a well placed villa with private grounds can be one of the keys to enjoying the region. Self-catering villas supply seclusion for families and small groups. With fully-equipped kitchens, this provides you the chance to prepare and cook local delicacies for yourself in your own comfortable surroundings.
4. Pretty much guaranteed weather but with cooling breezes.
Most people who visit the Algarve become converted enthusiasts. If you love warm places, sand and sea and generally relaxed holidays, then the Algarve could well be your dream destination.
There is also loads to do in the Algarve?
Great sports facilities
Apart from watersports, golf is the Algarve’s main draw, with about 30 good courses to choose from (ready to welcome amateur sportsmen as well as professional players) you will never be more than a hook and a slice away from one. Horse riding and tennis are also popular. But don’t forget to book activities to get the best out of this great holiday destination.
Lovely towns, villages and landscape
But sports aren’t the only thing, just sauntering through the labyrinthine of narrow streets and alleys in the towns and villages away from the coast is the best way of getting to know this part of the region. It’s is a lovely part of Portugal and just going for a drive can be a simple but pleasing way to enjoy the Algarve.Â
Great traditional cuisine
After the beauty of the landscape, you can discover the aromas and flavours of the traditional Algarve cuisine. Its gastronomy is especially rich with mouth-watering silvery sardines, all types of shellfish and fantastic traditional almond sweets and dried fruits. A typical menu could include caldeirada de peixe (fish-stew), cataplana de amijoas (steamed clams) or you could enjoy the traditional mountain food of stewed chickpeas and cabbage. Alternatives might also include renowned regional treats, such as figs, almonds and the brandy prepared from the arbutus-berry which is distilled in copper stills.
Lovely handicrafts
As you go through the Algarve, its mountains, valleys and plains rich in flora and fauna, you will feel as if you’re going through a region full of different customs, unaltered for several centuries. Handicrafts include excellent pottery, basketwork, copper and brass articles, or superb pieces of linen.
Great nightlife too
Only a step away from the tranquil peace of the inland region is the excitement of the Algarve nightlife. Bars, clubs, marinas and casinos assure visitors the very finest kind of fun.
Charming architecture
The region’s buildings are also something you can’t afford to miss. The architecture of the whitewashed homes, with their brightly-coloured window frames and outstandingly beautiful chimneys, the churches and the museums, all help to make this such an exceptional destination.Â
With all this what’s not to like?
With an average 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, miles of golden sands, clean ocean, outstanding sporting activities, and stunning scenery – all within a few hours’ flying time from most European cities – the Algarve will always be a magnet for overseas visitors. Which means it’s also an excellent place for investors to buy holiday villas to rent out to holidaymakers.
