Can a Canadian Citizen with a Canadian Driver’s licence rent a car while on holidays in Costa Rica?
What are some reputable car rental companies there? And how do you know that they’re reputable?
Yes, you can use a CA license.
As far as rentals… I try to avoid the big name (American) companies in CR and rent from a local rent-a-car like Toyota or Advantage (Economy Rent-a-car).
I’ve used this place many times: http://www.economyrentacar.com/index.aspx?OfficeId=ALAJU&affiliateId=61001

Unless you are renting for more than 10 days, it makes little sense to rent in the city to save the airport tax. You may save $40 but you will have to taxi from and to the airport into the city, which runs about $15 each way. A lot of hassle to save $10.
Another tip: take the full insurance. Your credit card should cover CDW (collision damage waiver), but take the full SLI (supplemental liability insurance), down to 0% deductible. The regular SLI gets you down to 20% deductible, take the extra coverage for another $5-6/day. In CR, the car rates aren’t that bad (off-season), but then insurance rates make them much higher. Makes sure you know the insurance cost before booking.
