my vacation
If I resign a job with enough vacation to last until next year, can I get paid for vacation next year also?

I have about 3 weeks of vacation time left at my current job. I am planning to resign such that December 12, 2008 is my last day, and take vacation until the end of the year. Obviously I will get paid until December 31, 2008. But since I have some leftover days, could I technically be considered an employee on January 1, 2009, at which point I could take my 3 weeks of vacation time for 2009, and get paid for those extra 3 weeks?

I assume it depends on the company and I will have to ask payroll, but is it typical to allow that?

I have a feeling you are not technically an employee on Jan 1st 09, therefore you should not be entitled to additional vacation. I believe, even if you resign later, you would be entitled to a percentage of the 09 vacation, depending on how many days you have worked in 2009. It doesn’t make logical sense otherwise.

Do you need a visa to travel to Mexico on holiday if your Polish?

Do you need a visa to travel to Mexico on holiday if your Polish?

My friend and I were planning to travel to America but it was such a hassle getting her a visa we decided to try somewhere else! I feel sorry for her, shes been in England for 6 years, has a full time job and is properly settled over here but just to apply for one its 150 dollars and an interrogation at the US embassy. And then there’s no guarantee she’l even get one!

No, citizen of Poland do not need a visa for a tourist stay in Mexico for up to 180 days.

However you will need to get either a direct flight to Mexico from Europe or a flight on Air Canada with a layover in Toronto. To fly with a layover in the United States requires a U.S. C-1 transit visa which involves the same fee as for a tourist visa ($131).

A Canadian transit visa is free or charge and it is only required for Polish citizen who do not hold one of the new electronic passports with a microchip. Polish citizen holding an e-passport can also be granted visa free stay in Canada. So you probably could also take a several day stop in Canada into consideration before you proceed on to Mexico.

How do package holidays damage the environment?

And what are the social/political effects of such holidays? A direct comparison with “eco holidays” would be very useful.

package holidays benefits all ! the people who have holidays, and those who give you the great time.
Economically it is good to everyone. You can’t swimm accross the ocean, so you need a plane, and that works with kerosene. Then, you have those poor countries which welcome tourists because a lot of people have a job because of you.(to feed their family). Politically, contries have common contract of exchange.they make arrangement to each other in exchange of services or product or natural ressources. Some tours operators, organize eco vacation, most in africa, where you will be living at the host (private) use their accomodation (shower, WC, but in africa, you might have water once in week and no bathroom at all) if it is ok for you to wipe your self with baby wipes, it is fine. just find out how to dicard the wipes…
The “restaurant” will be the host table. you have to eat what they offer. they are generally aware of turists habit, but they won’t offer you what the 3stars hotel next door has… you have to be prepared to have diahrrea, stomach ache,
If you have decided to do the eco-turism within the usa, you have those ranch or big farm houses where you can be usuful by helping out and use their facilities.
The other altenativ is : stay home if you are not ready.
In france (where i live actually) eco-turism is actually very trendy. You will start being used after 2 or 3 trips or a long period of holidays, because if you are not used… it is very hard, especially for american people.
