Fringe golf shots or shots not in the fairway call for golf tips for beginners that are different from the norm due to the high level of skill required Sometimes we hit shots into the trees, or high grass or fairway bunkers or worse places that have really hard slopes connected to them – aaarrrgghh! Most of us spend too much practice time with the driver and thus are not ready for this form of shot due to want of experience.
Thats why it is imperative for a new golfer to discover or exploit the knock-down or punch shot. The punch is a weapon that can be used in save situations when you want to advance to try to keep your score down. This type of shot allows you to hit the ball in adverse conditions in a low trajectory to a controlled distance by using a kind of chopping motion with a very short follow through.
Use this type of swing when you have entered an area where the trouble might be above your head or below your knees or both! The objective is to keep the ball at about 4 to 6 feet at the height of the trajectory. Your trouble spot could be low tree branches, high weeds, high winds with a narrow fairway…Whatever.
Punch shots are easy to use, but don’t be fooled – you will need lots of practice to acquire distance control. Get out on the range and get this done.
To start, bring the club to say, 1/2 to 3/4 of the way back, then play the ball more in the back of the stance. Take one or two more club than your usual shot distance. As with other golf swing tips be sure to keep your hands ahead of the swing throughout the contact phase. Think of it as a really powerful chip shot.
So take more club, choke down and play the ball back in your stance. Work through the swing keeping the lower body quiet as possible and flow through as low as possible. Virually all clubs can be “knock down clubs”, but do not play longer clubs with the ball too far back or you will end up with basically a long putt. This shot will surprise you with the distance it can generate so be sure to practice.
Finally, before swinging – make your stance narrower, shift weight to forward leg, then take a shorter backswing, swing down on the ball then hold the finish low. The punch shot is shorter than usual full golf swing, and the arms will assuredly stay closer to the body. A benefit of the ball being back in your stance is that you hit down on it more.

I actually have to show this to the students and check out what they think concerning this.
