Who do you hire to take care of your cat while you go on vacation?
Who would be best in my case if I ever got a cat: a trustworthy friend who doesn’t have a cat and may not know how to properly care for one, or hiring a random person who may or may not be trustworthy but knows all about cats? Also who do YOU hire when you go on vacation?
A trusted neighbor is often really great. They help you, and you help them out with something else.
There are professional pet sitters, and your vet can often provide a reference. You pay by the amount of service you want them to do. Once a day for food, water and checking the litter is usually the minimum. Companies should be bonded. Or, your vet may have a vet tech that wants to pick up some extra spending money.
If it is a friend that doesn’t have a cat, you need a sense of how responsible they are.
I have used neighbors, but as I got more cats, I fell back to hiring a semi-professional. She hand raised two of my cats, so I know she is going to give all my cats the care they would need. I also give a blanket authorization to my vets to cover any and all potential vet emergencies.
