Car rental in France – young driver fee – Help!?

I am going to France on vacation with my boyfriend in august, where we would like to rent a car in Nice. Unfortunately, my boyfriend (who is going to be the driver) will be 24½ years old at that time. All the car rental services such as Avis, Europcar, Hertz etc, that we have checked, charge an extra fee for young drivers (less than 25 years old). This will double the price of the car!! My boyfriend is a very good driver, has had his license for 6 years, and drives regularly. So I would like to know if there is ANY way to rent a car without that fee?
Classy: No, it’s not refundable unfortunately. I have looked my way through it, and that is why I am asking.

We had the same problem with a group of friends when we had to rent a car from southern France to Spain. Fortunately we had found a society which accepted to rent us a car as if we were 25. It was a small company, but we had to negociate. So I guess you should try with a small company (which needs more money than the big famous companies). You have to know tha the insurance excuse is false. If your boyfriend has had his driving license for more than 3 years it’s the exact same cost, no matter how old he is. On the other way I don’t know how it works for foreigners. Just try to negociate with a small company, don’t even try with big ones, that’s the only advice I can give you!
